Creating Choice Boards

A choice board is a graphic organizer that provides students with options for assessment. The teacher creates several options for students to show mastery of a certain skill, and then students select which method they would like to use to show their understanding.

I have seen great examples of choice boards, but one thing I often find lacking is the scaffolding. Choice boards are often used for summative assessments, and I wanted to create one that scaffolds from the basic knowledge-level of Bloom's Taxonomy to the creation stage.

I created a choice menu for a middle grades Folklore unit that allows students to choose their assessments at multiple levels. Although most of the assessments involve creativity and creation, as the student moves down the menu, the assessments grow in the level of thinking required.
