Founded by Bethany Richards

The Bike Box Project is a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for two purposes: (a) To support people with Parkinson's Disease in New Bern, NC and the surrounding area, and (b) To help fund Parkinson’s research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation

When our founder learned that her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, she attached a donation box to her bicycle and began pedaling for a cure. Over the course of 5 years, this project has raised approximately $110,000.

In 2020, we joined forces with a local gym, SWEAT Camp, and began hosting Rock Steady Boxinga beneficial, fitness class that allows people with PD to FIGHT BACK!

Our goal is to continue to host fundraisers, events, and Rock Steady Boxing as well as to pedal to every small town in the United States, spreading awareness and raising money to support people in the community with PD and to help fund research to eliminate the disease.

My Role: Grant Writer
BBP_ProfilePic.jpg

As a grant writer for Bike Box Project, I work with amazing local organizations to ensure that we have funding for new initiatives and to expand the work we are doing to support folks with PD. In the past three years, we have raised over $70,ooo to support individuals in the eastern North Carolina community. We are grateful to partner with local organizations who continuously support our work: The CarolinaEast Foundation, The Harold H. Bate Foundation, and Weyerhaeuser.

I also ride around my town, Sumter, SC, with a Bike Box on the back of my bike for donations. If you see me downtown or on campus, please stop and say hi and throw some change in the box!
